Tonight I read Orphan Ahwak by Raquel Rivera (Orca Book Publishers). It is 130 quick pages, with a strong indigenous girl as the title character.
While I found it in the youth section, I would have to say that the violence in this book makes it more appropriate for grade 6/7/8/9 in my opinion. It would be a very great HiLo book. I think this book has a broad appeal across a variety of readers. Raquel Rivera has done a good job in fleshing out the character, a young girl who is orphaned in an attack, and has to learn to fend for herself in the boreal forests and on the ice-scapes of the Canadian Arctic. She comes across some well rounded characters, including an old man who might be a magician, and a young family who remind her of home. The author leaves some interesting notes in the back about how she did her research, and my only wish is that some Inuit and northern indigenous people were consulted instead of read about, but some research is better than none! All in all, I would carry this in my classroom library!
