Today we watched this interview and poem "Indians" by Katherena Vermette. The students were asked to write a reflection on anything she said, the poem, her performance style, and/or their thoughts on her story about her brother going missing and the police's response.

Today our internet was very fussy so I had to wait until the end of the day to show this video.
*Please be aware of the language in the first video. I stopped it before the curse word, so the students were not exposed. If you stop the first video at the start of the poem and go to the second video, you'll get an edited version. We started our poetry unit by talking about what makes poetry. Is it the words on the page? The speed or timber or cadence of the spoken poem? Do poems always rhyme or are they ever literal? Our Poem of the Day was J.D. Salinger: "She wasn't doing a thing that I could see, except leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together." We watched 4 clips of different poems, (2 recited and 2 spoken word) and compared them to find some truths to Poetry. Our word of truth for the day is YEARNING. |
