We started our poetry unit by talking about what makes poetry. Is it the words on the page? The speed or timber or cadence of the spoken poem? Do poems always rhyme or are they ever literal? Our Poem of the Day was J.D. Salinger: "She wasn't doing a thing that I could see, except leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together." We watched 4 clips of different poems, (2 recited and 2 spoken word) and compared them to find some truths to Poetry. Our word of truth for the day is YEARNING.
